Sundays at New Home

Happy mother’s day!

Ps 128:3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.

Here is a rose for you mothers

At church this morning Brother Daniel Ellingburg preached from Philippians 2 versus 1-11. The three main points from Daniel’s sermon were the humiliation of Christ, the exaltation of Christ and Paul’s exhortation to us. Bro. Daniel began with the background of the Philippian church , Paul’s relationship to the Philippians, and the church’s attitude. In Acts 16 we are told the history of the Phllipians and how Paul had preached to Lydia by the river side in Macedonia and she was baptized, and her household. Afterwards a soothsayer girl possessed with a spirit followed Paul and Silas around which grieved Paul. Paul cast out the spirit from her (V 18). The girl had brought her masters great gain so they brought Paul and Silas to the magistrates and had them thrown in jail. An earthquake hit the prison and it is recorded in Acts how the Philippian jailer and his household were saved. The church proceeded from there with the same passion as Paul and they remained faithful to Christ.

In versus 5-9 we see Christ’s voluntarily humiliation. Some points that Daniel brought out regarding this humiliation are:

  1. Christ chose to submit.
    1. The term abnegation is used when one realizes their rights, but chooses to give them up. Christ is fully God, but made himself man for his people.
  2. Christ voluntarily emptied himself of his Godly rights and took on the form of a bondservant.
    1. A bondservant is different than the Israelite servants who sold themselves as servants for a debt.
    2. A bondservant voluntarily gives up his right to be free after 7 years for the rest of his life. As a sign of his commitment to his master his ear would be nailed to the doorpost.
  3. Christ was made into the likeness of man
    1. Cursed with a fleshly body
  4. Christ took on the curse of God including his scorn.

Regarding humility Daniel read from Calvin and how we should realize how low we really are and to not exalt ourselves. Because we are so low already humility is actually refraining from exalting oneself, rather than what Christ did which was to lower himself from his Holy position.

Versus 9-11 involve Paul’s encouragement and we considered 3 things.

  1. Be encouraged because of what God does. Because of the Father’s love for us and Christ’s love of the Father.
    1. God gives Christ a name above any other name. Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess. Believers won’t have to be forced to do those things, but unbelievers will.
  2. We’ve been given the freedom. Praise him and pray – he is a help in times of need
    1. We have a new name as well – Children of God and it is a great privilege to realize those privileges.
  3. The reason is for the Glory of God
    1. Act accordingly with Christ (see first 4 versus)..If there be any consolation in Christ.
    2. Realize the humility of Christ so bear on another’s burdens.
    3. The imagery that Daniel used was a brick wall and how each brick supports and is supported by 6 other bricks.

Daniel’s closing remark was that Paul used Christ as the example, not other churches.

Philippians 2: 1-11

1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,

2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
